INQUIRY LEARNING. DISCIPLINARY THINKING. CIVIC ACTION

Welcome to Social Studies Rising, a blog and online resource portal for social studies educators! Our vision is to see the discipline of social studies rising to a new position of prominence and enduring relevance in the 21st century. In the 21st century social studies classroom, students shine the light of the humanities and social sciences on current issues in order to participate in meaningful civic discourse and take informed action on compelling questions.

This vision is grounded in three practices:
  • Inquiry Learning -  investigating and discussing compelling historical and philosophical questions;
  • Disciplinary Thinking - reading, thinking, and writing like historians and social scientists; and
  • Civic Action - engaging in civic discourse, service, and advocacy for the common good.
